Want to help care for our coast?

Our planting program needs volunteers to help conserve the dunes at City and Floreat Beaches. The only prerequisite is a willingness to help.

Our Annual Schedule

Here’s a snapshot of our typical year-round activities.

Activity

Feb - Nov 

Monthly committee meetings  - To plan volunteer activities, monitor finances, review projects and opportunities, administration and marketing.

AGM - Our Annual General Meeting takes place late in February.

Grant funding applications - researching and deciding on grant submissions

Jul - Nov

Weeding - Including Spring weeding by Town of Cambridge before weed seeds spread

May-Jul

Planting - with early rain and when sand/soil still warm.

Sep - Nov

Planning for future planting - so plants can be ordered for the following year

Oct

Annual beach cleanup - in cooperation with Tangaroa Blue

Nov - Apr

Watering - as soon as hot weather commences until it ends

Ground preparations - Fencing, mulching, matting, plant cover removal from seedlings planted previous year

Dec

Christmas function - Celebrate end of the year's activities.

Volunteering FAQ’s

What to bring to planting events?

Long trousers, closed footwear, sun protection, water bottle. (Gloves & tools provided)

Can my children join in?

Yes, children are welcome.

What fitness level is required?

There are activities available for all levels of fitness.

What’s the normal duration for planting events?

1.5 - 2 hrs.

Easy ways to care for our coast

  • Follow instructional signage
  • Enjoy long walks along the beach (not the dunes)
  • Respect fence lines
  • Take your rubbish home and recycle
  • Support Containers for Change
  • Give wildlife space

If you are interested in joining the committee, have a chat with one of our current members who will be happy to provide insights into what’s involved and what openings might be available at present, or at the annual AGM.

Become a member

One of the many ways you can help to care for our coast, is by becoming a Cambridge Coastcare member. Your annual membership fee will help us to continue our work restoring and protecting our beautiful coastline. You don’t need to be a member to participate in our working bees. No one in our group receives any financial compensation, we are all volunteers.

Financial Contributions

Cambridge Coastcare (Inc) welcomes funds that go towards our efforts to conserve and restore local coastal dune ecosystems at City and Floreat Beaches. Please note that we don’t have DGR status so financial contributions are not tax exempt. Payments can be made by EFT to Cambridge Coastcare, BSB: 036-004, Account number: 143310.
